Global Content Delivery Service (GCDS) sees lower rates in FY18

Rates for the Defense Information Systems Agency’s (DISA) Global Content Delivery Service (GCDS) have been significantly reduced for fiscal year (FY) 2018.

“As a result of onboarding more customers, we’ve been able to achieve economies of scale and dramatically reduce rates for both implementation and service delivery,” said Tobi Felder, the GCDS program manager.

The GCDS provides mission partners with a cost-effective way to improve end-user performance, protect data and infrastructure, and provide information to warfighters in a timely and effective manner.

The system stores content on a number of geographically distributed servers, ensuring the availability of application content. When a user requests information from an application, the request is sent to the GCDS server closest to the end user. This reduces delivery time and congestion on the network. The GCDS also stores application content across multiple server locations globally, providing redundant failover availability.

The FY18 implementation and service rates, as well as a brief description of each service element are listed below.

Web Delivery:

GCDS improves the performance and delivery of web-based applications by storing content on servers that are close to the end user community, no matter where they are located. The GCDS servers are connected through a mapping system in order to ensure application content remains available to the end-user at all times. As an end-user requests content from an application server, GCDS will send the request to the GCDS server closest to the end user. This reduces the amount of time it takes for application content to be delivered. Additionally, since the application data is stored closer to the end user, the request does not go back to the application server, reducing congestion on the network.

NetStorage:

GCDS NetStorage is a secure DOD enterprise storage solution that eases burdens associated with storing static content by storing it closer to end users and serving it through a web application. NetStorage is not designed to host an application, but to store static content so it’s readily assessable by users.

Web Application Firewall:

GCDS Web Application Firewall allows web application owners to effectively detect and block malicious web based attacks. The firewall adds an additional layer of defense against attacks by being the first barrier. It can be configured to any level of protection an application requires.
