DISA DIRECTOR, LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR TOUR NEW BUILDING SITE

FORT MEADE, Md. - The Director of the Defense Information Systems Agency welcomed Maryland Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown and his BRAC Subcabinet today to the new DISA construction site on Fort George G. Meade.

Topics discussed during the visit included construction progress followed by information updates from the Transportation Secretary, Education Secretary and other Maryland cabinet officers.  Lt. Gen. Pollett also hosted a driving tour of the construction site conducted by Hensel Phelps, the lead contractor.

DISA plans to begin occupying their state-of-the-art facility in late 2010, when its first building is scheduled for completion.  The entire campus will consist of a 1.1 million square-foot, multistory campus featuring seven major buildings.  Construction is progressing at the 95-acre site, with two real-time webcams available at http://www.disa.mil/brac/building/. Animations featuring a virtual building tour and time-lapse construction are also available for viewing.

Other facility features include environmentally-friendly, sustainable design meeting the standards for LEED Silver Certification as determined by the U.S. Green Building Council. Building materials will come from local areas and consist of recycled material. Design also incorporates the latest information technology and amenities such as 85% of the workforce enjoying natural light. All buildings will be connected by enclosed walkways.

Under the 2005 BRAC law, DISA is required to complete its relocation to Fort Meade by September 2011. Current plans are for the move to begin in late 2010-early 2011 subject to construction progress, and will involve up to 4,300 DISA military, civilian, and contractor personnel.
