DISA WINS 2009 USD(AT&L) WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT AWARD
Arlington – The Defense Information Systems Agency today learned it had captured Silver in the 2009 Workforce Development Award competition sponsored by the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics (USD(AT&L)). DISA is one of three Defense Department “Large Organization” winners to be recognized for outstanding accomplishments in developing innovative, comprehensive learning and development programs for their workforces in the Category.
“We work hard to take care of our people,” said Jack Penkoske, DISA’s director of Manpower, Personnel and Security, “and this award simply confirms what we already know - that DISA is a great place to work.” Penkoske added, “With our move to Fort Meade, Maryland starting in 2010, we’re finding that DISA’s superior benefits and worklife initiatives are a major reason we’re retaining current employees and attracting new ones.” This award follows DISA’s Gold honors in 2007 and Bronze award in 2005.
The exceptional number of competitors this year spanned the entire nation, all military Services and defense agencies, and many different mission areas. Competing organizations have in the past reported establishing many effective best practices in areas including recruiting, internships, retention, performance management, partnerships, organization-unique training, leadership development, succession planning, executive coaching, mentoring, job rotation, job shadowing, and knowledge sharing. These best practices resulted in greater organizational and individual performance, increased workforce expertise, higher employee satisfaction, and significant cost savings. USD(AT&L) established this award program in 2004 to recognize Defense Department organizations that are achieving excellence in learning and development for their employees. Additionally, the award program identifies best practices for other USD(AT&L) organizations to adopt.
On November 4, 2009, USD(AT&L) will recognize Workforce Development Award winners at the Program Executive Officers'/Systems Command Commanders' Conference at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Learn more about this award at http://www.dau.mil/devaward/default.aspx.
