Training Strategy

The current HBSS training strategy consists of a combination of various training methodologies including: classroom, computer/web-based training, virtual training, simulation, and the use of subject matter experts via innovative collaborative technologies.

Input for these methodologies will be derived from:

  • Feedback from classroom training
  • VTE
  • Collab sessions
  • Surveys of DoD community
  • SMEs
  • Training stakeholders
  • Best practices
  • Lessons Learned
  • Help desk personnel
  • HBSS knowledge portal
  • Real-world events
  • Exercises
  • Conferences and IA5 training working group meetings

For additional HBSS training information please visit the HBSS Training DEPS page (use email certificate).

Online Training

The HBSS training materials provided here cover an introduction to HBSS from a tier-level approach. Basic, system-administrator, and management-level HBSS training is currently available. Use these resources to familiarize yourself with the product and to meet training prerequisites before attending classroom training. Future training material will be focused on development of an advanced HBSS operation and director-level CBT course.

Who needs online training?

Virtual Training

On September 10 FedVTE replaced the current CERT VTE system for all U.S. military and civilian users from across the U.S. federal government. All course completion records as of August 24th were migrated to that system. Users can access the new system at: https://www.FedVTE-FSI.gov. To support security concerns user passwords were not migrated. Once at the new site users will need to click on the "Forgot your password" link on the Login page and follow the reset procedures. The current VTE system will remain operational through the end of September but please keep in mind that progress reporting and access will not be maintained afterward. There is a current effort in progress to provide an alternative solution after that time to support non-U.S. military and government users along with other SEI and CMU partners and customers not authorized for FedVTE.

New FedVTE user accounts will be allowed after all current VTE account holders have completely transitioned. This transition is expected to be finalized by October 1, 2012. After existing accounts have transitioned, new accounts will be generated by the Community Manager from each user's U.S. federal organization. The FedVTE help desk has contact information for all existing Community Managers. After October 1, new users can contact the Community Manager from their organization to request an account. If an organization does not have a Community Manager, DHS will work with the CIO or CISO from that organization to establish one.

Below is a list of the DISA IA (Information Assurance) courses available in FedVTE.

  • Assured Compliance Assessment Solution (ACAS)
  • HBSS MR5 Admin
  • HBSS MR5 Advanced
  • DISA HBSS Management Roles
  • DISA HBSS Supplemental Content
Micro Training

Microtraining is a training methodology that leverages subject matter experts and collaboration tools to provide informal just-in-time training to the HBSS community.

This concept was derived out of the need to:

  • Develop informational methods to provide status of program to customers.
  • Support customer feedback and questions.
  • Provide categorical information conduits that allow for customer discussion and feedback.
  • Openly solicit training requirements from customers.
  • Develop a way to provide customer "self-help" by sharing organizational information (e.g. documents, guides, etc.).

*Previously recorded DCO Training Sessions also available.
