Defense Message System (DMS)

The DISA Europe DMS Team provides Tier II support of the DMS transport backbone, three regional DMS nodes and High Assurance Guards used for safely transferring messages between classified and unclassified networks. Additionally, the DMS Team provides guidance, support, technical assistance to theater COCOMs and components to help them meet their unique organizational messaging needs.

What is DMS? 
DMS is the DoD organizational messaging system supporting Command and Control record communications and providing guaranteed delivery within specific timeframes in accordance with the transmission precedence.

Our organization uses the Automated Message Handling System (AMHS), do we need DMS?
Yes, component operated systems such as AMHS, Decision Agent (DA) and DMDS provide the capability to send, receive, process and deliver message to organizational accounts; these systems rely on the DMS backbone to transport messages world-wide.

Is DMS ceasing operations in FY09?
Joint Staff has released a memorandum of intent to reduce DMS message traffic, and in particular unclassified message traffic, in FY09.  To this end, Joint Staff has established a working group with HQ DISA, MILDEP and COCOM participation.  The DMS program is funded, however, through 2012 and operations will not cease until all DMS requirements have been met with by a replacement system(s). 

Coalition and NATO Networks

The Coalition and NATO Networks Team provides planning, implementation and sustaining support for the DISA Multinational Information Sharing (MNIS) Program and serves as a liaison between USEUCOM and USAFRICOM coalition networking staffs, DISA Europe and the DISA MNIS Program Management Office. Key networks supported include: Combined Enterprise Regional Information Exchange System (CENTRIXS), Releasable De-Militarized Zone (REL-DMZ), Griffin, Multinational Interoperability Council Wide Area Network (MIC WAN), Battlefield Information, Collection, and Exploitation System (BICES), and Bi-Lateral Networks (BILATS).

Additionally, the Coalition and NATO Networks Team provides guidance and support for key allied interoperability exercises such as Combined Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (CWID) and Combined Endeavor.

What is REL-DMZ? How do I access REL-DMZ?

REL-DMZ provides partner country access to Secret Releasable content on the SIPRNET. Information on REL-DMZ and the access procedures for REL-DMZ are located on the SIPRNET Support Center website on the SIPRNET. Please contact the Coalition and NATO Networks Team for more information.

What is the CENTRIXS Cross Enclave Requirement (CCER) and what is the migration strategy for CENTRIXS?

The CCER is an effort to consolidate select domains, or “flavors”, of CENTRIXS onto a common enterprise infrastructure. More information is available on the Joint Staff CCER Wiki.

How is REL-DMZ different from Griffin?

REL-DMZ provides web-based access to Secret Releasable content located on the US SIPRNET for partner nation countries. Griffin provides interconnections, via cross domain solution guards, between the US SIPRNET and other partner nations’ Secret Releasable networks. Additionally, Griffin provides only email with attachments sharing amongst the US and partner nations. US SIPRNET users can access Griffin by “enabling” their current SIPRNET email account for Griffin. Global Command and Control System - Joint (JCSS-J)

GCCS-J provides a Common Operational Picture (COP) to the National Command Authority (NCA) and Joint Commanders. GCCS-J is the DoD Command and Control (C2) system of record providing Situational Awareness (SA) and Integrated Imagery and Intelligence (I3) to support operations, mobilization and sustainment. GCCS-J Global can be broken down into four major mission capability areas: Situational Awareness (GCCS-J Global COP); Intelligence (I3); Mobilization, Logistics and Sustainment (JOPES & GCSS); Force Readiness (GSORTS).

What is the GCCS-J Family of Systems (FoS)? 

GCCS-J provides a Common Operating Environment (COE) for a multitude of systems and tools — both joint and service specific. These systems feed data into GCCS-J and are referred to as “The GCCS-J FoS.”

What is Common Operational Picture (COP)?

COP is the integrated capability to receive, correlate, and display a Common Tactical Picture (CTP), including planning applications and theater-generated overlays and/or projections; for instance, Meteorological and Oceanographic (METOC), battle plans, and force position projections. Overlays and projections may include location of friendly, hostile, and neutral units, assets, and reference points.

What is GCSS?

The Global Combat Support System (GCSS) is the information tool that provides logistics operators and the warfighter — at both the Joint and component command levels — a fused, integrated, near real-time, accurate logistics picture that enables control of the logistics pipeline.

What is JOPES?

The Joint Operation Planning and Execution System (JOPES) is a system of systems, comprised of policies and procedures, communicating capabilities, Information Technology (IT), data, and people. By combining these components, the Department of Defense (DOD) is able to plan for and conduct Joint military operations.

What is GSORTS?

The Global Status of Resources and Training System (GSORTS) is used as a database query tool to obtain information on unit readiness and location data.

What is GCCS-I3?

The Global Command and Control System - Integrated Intelligence and Imagery (GCCS-I3) provides Common Operational Picture (COP)–centric imagery and intelligence of related capabilities developed by the four military services and selected agencies in response to Joint warfighter requirements.
