JCSS Banner

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Question

What is required for my custom device model to work with the Capacity Planner?

Answer

The Capacity Planner relies on the self-description of the device model.

Often, the best approach is to find a type of model whose routing behavior closely matches the routing behavior of the new model and copy its self-description machine type and interface type. The machine type determines which layer the device belongs in, and the interface type determines the type of traffic the device supports. For example, if the new model is an end-device that only supports data, use one of the JCSS computer models as a guide. Alternately, if the new model behaves like a router but can't directly be represented as one, still use a JCSS router as a guide for determining self-description settings.

More details about the device model self-description can be found in the JCSS Model Development Guide.
